First Quarter
NO SCORING
It took sixteen years, but for the first time this century thanks to both teams agreeing to play, the reigning Monsignor Martin champion and reigning Section VI Class AA champion finally played a regular season contest. The hype for the game was increased by both teams' continued success to start the year - Canisius entered the game ranked #1 locally, #1 in NY, and #49 nationally by USA Today; Jamestown entered the game ranked #2 locally and #3 in NY. Jamestown would receive the opening kick, but a 3-and-out would quickly give the ball to Canisius. While Canisius was able to move the ball a bit, their drive would stall and force a punt. Each team would exchange a few turnovers throughout the rest of the quarter, but Canisius would be in position at the end of the quarter to score with a first-and-goal at the two yard line to begin the second quarter.
Second Quarter
CANISIUS - M Thomas 2yd RUN (Kick Fail) - Drive Info: 7 plays, 33 yards in 2:17
CANISIUS - Zaffram 1yd RUN (Tarbutt Kick) - Drive Info: 9 plays, 68 yards in 3:51
Canisius would bookend the quarter with scores. After the first score, Jamestown moved the ball and burned the clock but would be forced to punt again. Canisius' ensuing drive, however, was ended after a fumble from Thomas in the midst of a big play run was recovered by Jamestown. The Crusader defense would force a 3-and-out that saw Jamestown lose yards, and Canisius would take their next possession down the field for a score to take a 13-0 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
CANISIUS - Zaffram 3yd RUN (Tarbutt Kick) - Drive Info: 5 plays, 60 yards in 1:29
Jamestown - Carlson 80yd PASS from Holland (Peters Kick) - Drive Info: 1 play, 80 yards in 0:13
Jamestown - Liuzzo 87yd FUMBLE RETURN (Peters Kick)
Canisius would return the opening kick of the half to inside Jamestown territory, but an "offensive" pass interference call would disrupt the Crusader drive. Jamestown would be forced to punt again after gaining just 13 yards on their ensuing possession, and Canisius would proceed to drive down the field for a score. The Red Raiders, however, would not back down, as Jamestown, used to scoring points and big plays, was finally able to get one against the Crusaders as Holland connected with Carlson for a quick strike, big play score to get on the board. With Canisius driving at the end of the quarter to score again, Jamestown recovered another fumble (CHS had 7 fumbles in the game), and with a fortuitous bounce, scoop-and-scored to pull within a score.
Fourth Quarter
CANISIUS - Wheatley 15yd PASS from Loucks (Tarbutt Kick) - Drive Info: 9 plays, 63 yards in 5:14
As Canisius turnovers and the support of an entire community continued to provide energy for Jamestown, a Crusader touchdown drive that took up nearly half of the time in the quarter would effectively seal the game for Canisius. Jamestown would have one final opportunity with the ball but would shortly turn the ball over when Jack Seminara came up with his second interception of the game. Canisius would run out the clock to secure the win.
