California High School Baseball - Poly wallops Webb
May 8, 2012: Pasadena, CA 91106 In Tuesday's league challenge, the Poly Panthers (Pasadena, CA) baseball squad triumphed over the visiting Webb Gauls (Claremont, CA), by a final score of 10-0.
With the win, Poly upgrades its record to 15-5 on the season. The Panthers host Rio Hondo Prep (Arcadia, CA) to battle the Kares in a Prep battle on Friday, May 11. The Kares enter the battle with a record of 7-11. Rio Hondo Prep won 12-10 in their recent league battle against Chadwick (Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA)
The Gauls now possess a 19-4 record. They take the field next when they travel to Flintridge Prep for a Prep battle on Thursday, May 10. Webb will play a Rebels squad coming off a 12-3 non-league win over Yeshiva (Los Angeles, CA). The Rebels record now stands at 7-15.
Game Summary
Riding a combination of strong pitching, timely defense, and relentless hitting, Poly placed itself in the drivers seat for the Prep League championship with a 6-inning mercy victory over Webb. The Panthers (15-5, 9-2 league) have now won 11 straight and 13 of 14. Chris Ward (9-0) shut out the Gauls on 4 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Ward was backed by strong defense all around, none more important than Davey Feess' spectacular diving catch in shallow center field to end the top of the 4th with two Webb runners in scoring position and Poly ahead just 3-0 at the time. Poly's 13-hit attack was highlighted by Caleb Lee's 2nd home run of the season and doubles by Zack Bern and Joey Asperger. Lee was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI overall, while Luke Asperger, Bern, and Ward all had 2 hits, Logan Beerman scored 3 runs, and Luke Asperger and Jonah Campbell each had 2 RBI. Poly can clinch the league championship with a win in the regular season finale vs. Rio Hondo Prep.
