Delaware High School Basketball - Wilmington Friends thwarted by St. Elizabeth
January 6, 2012: Wilmington, DE The Wilmington Friends Quakers basketball team (Wilmington, DE), dropped 64-55 in Friday's non-league battle with the host St. Elizabeth Vikings (Wilmington, DE)
The Vikings now possess a 6-3 record. They play next when they travel to Smyrna for a non-league battle on Tuesday, January 10. St. Elizabeth will battle a Eagles team coming off a 61-59 non-league loss to St. Andrew's (Middletown, DE). The Eagles record now stands at 7-2.
The Quakers (6-2) will now prepare for their battle against Indian River (Dagsboro, DE). The Indians come into the non-league battle with a 0-9 record.
First Quarter
Andre Patton had 8 points and Chris Thorp added 6 to lead the Vikings to an early 12 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. St. E's hit 4 of 5 three pointers to help create the early lead. The Vikings defense worked hard to hold the Wilmington Friends to just 9 points in the quarter.
Second Quarter
The Vikings' Timmy Massado scored 8 points with 2 3's and Chris Thorp added another 3 to help the Vikings extend the lead to 21 points in the 2nd quarter before foul trouble forced both Pattons, Matt Kisalewski and Chris Thorp out of the lineup. Against the inexperienced Viking bench, Friends cut the lead to 7 points with the help of 12 foul shots in the 2nd quarter before the quarter ended with a 10 point Viking lead.
Third Quarter
The 3rd quarter was back and forth shootout with Friends outscoring the Vikings 19-18 to cut the lead to 9 entering the 4th quarter Eric Patton hit 2 big shots to help quell a Friend's surge that ultimately cut the lead to 6. Balanced scoring from the entire Quaker lineup supported the surge, Co-captains Andre Patton and Timmy Massado led the Vikings with 6 points each to help stave off the Quakers.
Fourth Quarter
Massado's control of the game and the clock, including an outstanding assist to Eric Patton's second goal of the quarter helped the Vikings secure the victory. Massado was 4-4 from the foul line to extend the lead to 13 points with 1 minute left before both teams cleared their benches. The loss drops the Wilmington Friends Quakers to 6 and 2 and improves the Vikings record to 6-3. Andre Patton's (17 points and 10 rebounds) double double along with 7 blocks, 5 assists and 3 steals and Timmy Massado's 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 7 assists to go along with his game high 21 points led the Vikings.
