Rhode Island High School Basketball - West Warwick nudges Tiverton
January 4, 2013: West Warwick, RI 02893 In Friday's league outing, the West Warwick Wizards (West Warwick, RI) basketball squad nipped the visiting Tiverton Tigers (Tiverton, RI), by a margin of 72-67.
The Wizards (9-0) will now prepare for their outing against Barrington (Barrington, RI). The Eagles go into the Division II - East outing with a 8-2 record. In their last outing, Barrington got by Exeter-West Greenwich (West Greenwich, RI), 60-49, in a league outing.
The Tigers now own a 1-4 record. They take the field next when they host Shea for a non-league outing on Monday, January 7.
Second Quarter
Down 27-19 with 4:09 go in the first half, the slow starting Wizards went on a 11-2 run to close out the first half and take a 30-29 lead into the locker room.
Senior Co-Captain Rich Grenier Jr. (2/2 from the foul line) and Freshman Matt Grenier (one three pointer and 2/2 from the foul line) combined for seven points to help the Wizards to close out the first half.
Fourth Quarter
Junior Brad Young scored 13 of his team 24 points in the second half and Freshman Trevor Lawton scored 13 of his career high 21 points to rally the Wizards past the pesky Tigers of Tiverton. The duo helped the Wizards erase a 58-51 Tiverton lead with 6:50 to play.
The Wizards, who outrebounded the Tigers, 50-31, were led by Lawton who pulled down 22 rebounds.
Sophomore Kody Greenhalgh scored all of his ten points in the second half.
Junior point guard Austin Paygai finished with five points, six rebounds, six steals, and 11 assists.
West Warwick, who has won 31 of their last 34 games dating back to last season, is now 5-0 in league play (9-0 overall).
