When you gain more yards than any other high school player at your position, then you become the easy choice for national player of the year.
The only problem is that was the case for a pair of players named to this year's MaxPreps Medium Schools All-American Team, presented by the U.S. Air Force.
Maty Mauk of Kenton (Ohio) became the all-time national leader for career passing yards and a number of other passing statistics while finishing just short of winning an Ohio Division IV state championship.
Meanwhile Hillcrest senior receiver Dorial Green-Beckham moved into first place on the all-time national receiving yardage list while leading his team to an 11-2 record. He finished his career with 297 receptions for 6,456 yards and 72 touchdowns.
However Mauk gets the nod here, considering that he now holds the national record for career passing yards (18,929 yards), touchdown passes (219), attempts (2,083), completions (1,336) and total offensive yards (22,036).
Mauk was also named the Ohio Player of the Year by JJ Huddle and he was the Ohio Division IV Offensive Player of the Year. He led Kenton to a 14-1 record, falling just short of winning a state title.
A player is considered for the medium schools all-american team if his school plays in a state enrollment division that generally has between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
Here are the rest of the MaxPreps Medium Schools All-Americans as presented by the U.S. Air Force.
