League recap: Choate Rosemary Hall falls to upstart Phillips Academy

NEPSAC Freelance recap October 8, 2013

Phillips Academy scored a shocking upset when it eliminated Choate Rosemary Hall, 41-7. At the time, the Wild Boars were ranked ninth in the state, while the Big Blues were 81st.

Northfield Mount Hermon moved up to 61 from 242 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in NEPSAC Freelance. The Hoggers were able to move up by losing to Cushing Academy 48-6.

Phillips Academy's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Thomas Lane threw for 111 and 2 touchdowns and Jake Howell had 131 yards receiving. On the ground Ryder Stone chipped in 102 yards. Brandon Michel helped Phillips Academy's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 81 yards.

Ian Maag was a passing and rushing force as Leon Modeste's team defeated Choate Rosemary Hall. He completed 7 passes for 132 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 1 yards. Maag's key target this week was Howell, who caught 6 passes for 131 yards.

Lane put up the best numbers through the air as the Big Blues beat Erik Cooper's team.

Phillips Academy's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Big Blues feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Maag has thrown for 444 yards and 4 touchdowns this season, while Howell has 13 catches for 262 yards.

The Penguins are in fifth place, while Phillips Academy is in second place.

The Big Blues were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping the Wild Boars. Phillips Academy came in at 8 in the state poll after placing at number 81 last week.
