Top 15 most dominant Maryland high school football programs since 2006

It's little surprise that DeMatha leads the way. What is surprising is how the Stags have built their lead.

See Maryland's best team in action last season against a national-caliber opponent.

The most dominant team in Maryland since MaxPreps became America's source for high school sports isn't a huge surprise. DeMatha (Hyattsville) has a lengthy track record of athletic success and has three players active in the NFL.

What is a big surprise is how the Stags grabbed the No. 1 spot. Our points criteria reward teams that reach state title games, and the Stags don't play for state titles since they are part of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. So to make up for the bonus points they're missing out on, the Stags have to finish high each year in the MaxPreps Maryland Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.

The same applies to the No. 2 team - Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney).

When it comes to schools eligible for titles, nobody has won more than Dunbar (Baltimore) with six crowns.

Here is how the points break down:

1. 20 for a state title

2. 10 for state championship game appearance

3. Other points are based on where a team finished in the final MaxPreps Maryland Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. For example, if a team finished No. 1 overall, it would receive 25 points. If it finished 25th overall, the team would get one point. No points are awarded if the team did not finish in the Top 25.
