ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Special teams carried
Sandia (Albuquerque, N.M.) to a 35-7 victory over
La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.) on Saturday as the return units contributed two touchdowns. The special teams of the Matadors scored on a kick return and a punt return.
After taking the lead on an
Ethan Gifford touchdown run in the second quarter, Sandia was up 7-0 at the half.
SHS grew its lead to 14 points entering the fourth quarter. The Matadors' lone score in the quarter came on an Gifford touchdown run.
A 21-point fourth quarter was enough to cement the win for Sandia, as it pushed the final margin of victory to 28.
La Cueva's only touchdown came on a run by
Mitchell Cantwell in the fourth quarter.
SHS had given up an average of 17.0 points prior to the contest. The seven points that the Bears ended with were well below their average of 18.6 coming into the game.
The victory avenged Sandia's close 24-21 loss to La Cueva last season.
The win brought Sandia's winning streak to three games.
