5A Region 1 recap October 8, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 5A Region 1 this week, Spanish Fort beat St. Paul's Episcopal 29-6. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Faith Academy scaled the state rankings by moving to 165 from 201 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Rams climbed the ranks as a result of besting Williamson 41-20.
Gulf Shores's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Parker Mason threw for 11 and 1 touchdown and Parker Mason had 63 yards receiving. On the ground Nathan Harris chipped in 115 yards. Joe Zehentner helped Gulf Shores' passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 17 yards.
Harris was a passing and rushing force as the Dolphins lost to Vigor. He completed 8 passes for 99 yards and also ran for 115 yards. Harris' favorite target this week was Mason, who caught 3 passes for 63 yards.
Mason and Harris gave Gulf Shores a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week. Teammate Mason added to the ground attack by rushing for 17 yards.
Gulf Shores' offense cannot be tamed this season and the Dolphins feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Harris has thrown for 448 yards and 1 touchdown this season, while Corey Kelly has 13 catches for 124 yards. Harris also leads the league in rushing with 483 yards.
The top two teams in 5A Region 1 will face off this week when first place Spanish Fort takes on second place Vigor. Spanish Fort topped the Saints last week, while the Wolves beat Ben Blackmon's team.
St. Paul's Episcopal fell to Mark Freeman's team 29-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.
