Week 1 Large-School Star of the Week
Aaron Green, San Antonio Madison: Green, a sophomore, put in a performance of epic proportions. Green rushed for 428 yards and set a San Antonio city-record by rushing for nine touchdowns in a 69-56 shootout victory over Kerrville Tivy. Green scored on runs of 1, 7, 12, 80, 13, 56, 12, 55, and 9 yards in the victory. His record-breaking score came with 27 seconds remaining in the game.
Week 1 Lone Star Large-School Stars
Shavodrick Beaver/ Eric Ward, Wichita Falls Rider: Despite a 34-27 loss to Cedar Hill, Beaver and Ward were as dazzling as advertised. Beaver, a Michigan verbal, threw for 279 yards and added 91 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including one from 37 yards. Ward scored on an 80-yard run and a 44-yard touchdown reception from Beaver and tallied 227 total yards for the Raiders.
Ossam Cook, Klein Oak: Cook rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-29 victory over Cypress Creek. To open the scoring, Cook tied an unbreakable Texas state record by covering the entire field on a 99-yard touchdown run. Cook would later add scoring runs of 4 and 41 yards. His 41-yarder would prove to be the game-winner for Klein Oak.
Ja’Terian Douglas, Arlington Lamar: Lamar blasted Weatherford 72-28 thanks to a huge performance from Douglas. On 21 carries, Douglas rushed for 274 yards and scored six touchdowns for the Vikings. Douglas hit paydirt on runs of 7, 42, 47, 47, 35, and 31 yards in the resounding victory, giving head coach Eddy Peach his 301st career victory.
Andre Gautreaux, Friendswood: Gautreaux was Karam’s top target in Friendswood’s 42-21 victory over Dayton. Gautreaux caught nine passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
Denton Guyer: For the first time in school-history, Guyer won back-to-back games. It had to happen some time, but Guyer took out none other than vaunted Stephenville 19-16 to move to 2-0 on the young season. Marquis Smith struck Jaimaine Wilhite on a 44-yard screen pass for the game-winning touchdown.
Henry Hunter/Brandon Lowery, Sachse: In a 47-35 victory over McKinney, Hunter completed 13-of-17 passes for 221 yards and five touchdowns. Lowery caught all five touchdowns and finished with 12 catches for 220 yards for the Mustangs.
Jacob Karam, Friendswood: In a battle of two quarterbacks looking forward to moving on to Big XII schools, Karam got the upper-hand. The Texas Tech commit threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns on 29-of-41 passing in a 42-21 over Dayton. Trailing 7-0 early on, Karam found Andre Gautreaux on a 42-yard scoring strike to tie the score. In the second quarter, Karam struck again with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Austin Fitzpatrick.
Kendial Lawrence, Rockwall-Heath: Lawrence had 16 carries in Rockwall-Heath’s season-opener, rushing for 190 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-27 victory over Sherman. Lawrence opened his evening with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown while his team with his team trailing 7-3. Lawrence followed his kickoff return up with touchdown runs of 76, 20, and 4 yards in a 26-point second quarter.
Colton Palmer, Kerrville Tivy: Palmer threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns in a 69-56 loss to San Antonio Madison. Palmer also added 69 rushing yards and three touchdowns, accounting for all eight of Tivy’s touchdowns in the loss.
Russell Shepard, Cypress Ridge: Shepard totaled four touchdowns in a 51-21 victory over Klein, a game where Cypress Ridge rolled to 633 yards of total offense. Shepard rushed for 206 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. The LSU commit added 177 passing yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-20 passing and accounted for all Cypress Ridge touchdowns as it took a 28-7 halftime lead.
Logan Vick, Kerrville Tivy: For the second week in a row, Vick was a standout target for Tivy. In a 69-56 loss to San Antonio Madison, Vick caught 10 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort. In two games, Vick has caught 22 passes for 363 yards and four touchdowns.
Jacolby Walker/Ja’Mes Logan/Adam Watson, Spring Westfield: Walker made a habit of finding his top two receivers in a 42-27 victory over Cypress Falls. Walker threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns passes, all four of them going to Logan and Watson. Logan finished with four grabs for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Watson caught five balls for 115 yards and another two touchdowns for the Mustangs.
The Woodlands Defense: For the first time since 1991, The Woodlands is celebrating a victory over Katy. The Highlanders lambasted the defending 5A-Division II state champion 47-0 featuring a salty defense. The Woodlands held Katy to 72 total yards, all coming on the ground. The Woodlands recovered three of Katy’s seven fumbles on the night and held Katy to 0-for-7 through the air.
Ricky Zorn, Lake Highlands: In a 38-35 victory over Mesquite Horn, Zorn rushed for 211 yards on 23 carries and scored three touchdowns. Through the air, Zorn threw for 115 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Texas 5A Associated Press Top 10 Recaps
1. Euless Trinity (1-0): Idle
Next: Sept. 12 at Cedar Hill.
2. Plano (2-0): Defeated DeSoto, 28-20.
Plano gained just 52 yards in the first half, trailing 20-7 at halftime. In the second half, it was a different Plano team. Rex Burkhead rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats in the victory. His 7-yard run in the third quarter brought Plano back to a 20-14 deficit. Quarterback Carson Meger took it from there, scoring on a 1-yard sneak and finding Kris Lott on a 14-yard touchdown pass for the final tally. Defensive back Laron Kelly intercepted two passes in the second half to set up Plano touchdowns.

3. Southlake Carroll (2-0): Defeated Arlington, 44-10.
Carroll led 9-3 at half in a hard-fought battle, but thanks to quarterback Kyle Padron, broke it open in the second half. Padron threw for 293 yards and accounted for five touchdowns for the Dragons. Two of Padron’s touchdown passes went to Ryan Walker from 8 and 23 yards in a 35-point second half. Padron’s 29-yard touchdown run in the second quarter broke a 3-3 tie.

4. Galena Park North Shore (2-0): Defeated Aldine Eisenhower, 33-14.
North Shore made it 72 straight regular season victories to tie a Texas state record. DeAundre Jones rushed for 123 yards to lead the Mustangs, while Tracy Woods added 119 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Quarterback Alex Tillman threw for 109 yards and two touchdowns for North Shore. North Shore’s streak tied Southlake Carroll’s record, set in 1993.

5. Abilene (2-0): Defeated Plano East, 55-17.
Plano East led 7-3 after one quarter before facing Abilene’s wrath. Quarterback Stephen Warren completed 16-of-22 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles. Zach Bass rushed for a team-high 113 yards and two touchdowns to lead Abilene. Herschel Sims returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown with Abilene leading 17-14 to kickstart the onslaught.

6. Allen (2-0): Defeated Monterrey Tec (Mexico), 55-15.
In an international contest, Allen downed Monterrey Tec from Mexico. Quarterback Matt Allen threw for 127 yards and three touchdowns while adding 113 rushing yards and two more touchdowns. In the third quarter, Allen broke loose on a 60-yard touchdown run to give Allen a 42-7 lead. Monterrey’s Diego Ortiz rushed for 145 yards on 30 carries.

7. Odessa Permian (2-0): Defeated San Angelo Central, 46-14.
Permian rolled to 398 total yards and got two touchdown runs from Trevor Adams and Alan Castillejos in the victory. Adams, Permian’s quarterback, completed 18-of-30 through the air for 246 yards in the victory. Central led 7-0 after the first quarter, but the Panthers responded with 30 points in the second quarter to deliver an early knockout blow. Ryan Rumbaugh caught six passes for the Panthers for 113 yards. Sherard Ray led Permian with 80 rushing yards.

8. Katy (0-2): Lost to The Woodlands, 47-0.
Katy fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1984 with a shocking loss to The Woodlands, especially since putting North Shore’s winning-streak in jeopardy to open the season. Katy only managed 72 total yards in the loss and did not throw for a yard through the air. The Woodlands defeated Katy for the first time since 1991 and got 398 total yards in the victory. Ryan Eastman and Daniel Lasco both rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Highlanders. Andy McCloud threw for 159 yards and a touchdown.

9. Spring Westfield (1-0): Defeated Cypress Falls, 42-27.
Jacoby Walker threw for 255 yards on 12-of-17 passing and four touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to the victory. Three of Walker’s touchdown passes came in the first half as Westfield built a 35-7 lead at halftime. Running back Roland Hannah added two first half touchdowns for the Mustangs and rushed for a team-high 56 yards. Ja’Mes Logan caught four passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns while Adam Watson snagged five passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Westfield receiving corps. For Cy Falls, quarterback Kolby Gray rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns in a losing effort.

10. Converse Judson (1-1): Lost to Smithson Valley, 23-13.
Judson could not hold on to a four-point halftime lead, watching it evaporate with eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter when Smithson Valley quarterback Jacob Brown threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Cody Matthews. Ryan Wood capped off the comeback when he intercepted a Judson pass and took it 50 yards for a touchdown.

Texas 4A Associated Press Top 10 Recaps
1. Austin Lake Travis (2-0): Defeated Austin Westlake, 38-17.

2. Wichita Falls Rider (0-1): Lost to Cedar Hill, 34-27.
Cedar Hill stormed to a 20-0 lead before Rider exploded for 27 third quarter points to take a 27-20 lead thanks to quarterback Shavodrick Beaver and wide receiver Eric Ward. Beaver threw for 272 yards and added 103 rushing yards for the Raiders while Ward added 221 total yards and two touchdowns.
Next: Sept. 11 at Sulphur Springs.
3. Everman (2-0): Defeated Wichita Falls, 42-14.
Everman pounded out 336 rushing yards in the decisive victory. Ryan Smith rushed for a team-high 98 yards for the Bulldogs and added a touchdown run. Quarterback Marcus McAdoo threw for 126 yards and hit Chris Franklin on two touchdown passes. Franklin added 57 yards rushing and another touchdown for the Bulldogs.
Next: Sept. 11 at Fort Worth Southwest.
4. Dayton (1-1): Lost to Friendswood, 42-21.
Dayton quarterback Cody Green put his team in the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run. From there, it was a night to forget for the Nebraska commit. Green threw for 263 yards and two interceptions while completing only 45.6 percent of his passes in the loss. A.J. Dugat latched onto seven passes for 153 yards for the Broncos. Cameron Lacour returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to make things interesting to open the second half as Dayton trailed, 14-13. M.L. Hines returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown to stop a streak of 28 unanswered points by Friendswood.

5. Dallas Highland Park (2-0): Defeated Frisco Liberty, 42-14.
Matt Bonano returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for six to get Highland Park off to a fast start. On Highland Park’s offensive play, Bryan Dickenson collected the first of three touchdowns with an 80-yard run. Quarterback Luke Woodley threw for 186 yards and two touchdown passes, both to Dickenson.

6. Abilene Cooper (2-0): Defeated Saginaw Boswell, 42-21.
Quarterback Ryan Heslep threw for 235 yards and four scores to lead Cooper into its rivalry battle with 5A Abilene next weekend. Four different receivers caught touchdown passes from Heslep in the victory. A’mon Pimpton rushed for 139 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown run for the Cougars. Will Ford returned a punt 87 yards for a score to pace Cooper.

7. Aledo (2-0): Defeated Grapevine, 37-14.
Aledo scored 21 second quarter points to take control after a scoreless first quarter. Tanner McDonald compiled 193 yards and totaled four touchdowns for Aledo. McDonald threw for two touchdown passes and added a pair of scores on the ground. Aaron Corby had 122 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions. Joel Hasley rushed for 128 yards to pace the Bearcats.
Next: Sept. 12 vs. Weatherford.
8. Port Lavaca Calhoun (2-0): Defeated Brazosport, 42-7.
The Sandcrabs rushed for 356 yards in the victory. Quarterback James Ezzell rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns for Calhoun. Sterling Jones added two touchdown runs for the Sandcrabs in the victory. Calhoun stormed out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and eventually led 42-0 after three quarters of play.
Next: Sept. 12 at Floresville.
9. Longview (1-1): Defeated Tyler Lee, 21-0.
It was a knock down drag out battle, but Longview made the plays when it counted en route to the victory. After a scoreless first half, Longview’s Tyler McCray scored on a 2-yard run with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter to give Longview a 7-0 lead. In the fourth quarter with the outcome still in doubt, the Lobos got a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown by Alonte Darden. Finally Longview put the game away for good when Aaron Johnson scored on a 13-yard touchdown run. McCray rushed for 98 yards to lead the Lobos. Tyler Lee turned the ball over five times in the loss.

10. Kerrville Tivy (1-1): Lost to San Antonio Madison, 69-56.
The scoreboard operator was busy and Madison pulled the upset over Tivy in a shootout. Logan Vick led Tivy with 10 receptions for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Colton Palmer threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns for Tivy and added three touchdowns.
