UCLA-bound Lonzo Ball, T.J. Leaf among headliners.
At the risk of sounding like Mr. Obvious, Lonzo Ball of Chino Hills is the MaxPreps California Boys Basketball State Player of the Year.
Perhaps the most obvious choice for State Player of the Year since Jason Kidd played at St. Joseph Notre Dame nearly 25 years ago, Ball was named the National Player of the Year by MaxPreps and was also the all-area Player of the Year by the Los Angeles Times, the San Bernardino Sun, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin and the Southern Section.
Ball led Chino Hills to a No. 1 ranking in the nation, a state championship and a 35-0 record while averaging a triple double: 23.9 points per game, 11.3 rebounds and 11.5 assists per game.
Ball's head coach, Steve Baik, is also the head coach of the year. It is rare that a public school can claim the No. 1 ranking in the nation, but Chino Hills did just that by winning the City of Palms Tournament, the MaxPreps Holiday Classic and the California Open Division state championship. Along the way, Chino Hills tied a state record with 18 games of 100 or more points.
The MaxPreps All-State Teams include a first, second and third team with 15 honorable mention selections. A 10-player first and second team for each division has also been selected. Players were classified for each division based on where their team played in the state tournament. If a team played in the Open Division of the state tournament, they were classified by the division they played at the section level. All teams that played in an open division at the section level were considered for Division I.
State players of the year for each division included the following: Division I - Lonzo Ball, Division 2 - Jake Killingsworth, Serra (San Mateo), Division 3 - Jaelen Ragsdale, Weston Ranch, Division 4 - Colin Slater III, Immanuel (Reedley), and Division 5 - Jaden Smith, St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda).
