Audacia Moore gets a kick out of watching her Wichita Heights teammates run their leg of the 4X100 relay.
“Its exciting,” Moore said of the seconds leading up to her portion of the race.
Then Moore takes her spot as the anchor runner and waits for the handoff. That’s when all eyes are on her.
Moore has given high school track and field enthusiasts across Kansas, and beyond, plenty of reason to watch her every move over the past couple of seasons. A year ago, Moore thwarted fellow City League sprinter Sylvia Alexander’s run at four straight 6A 100-meter titles.
The Wichita Southeast sprinter won track’s shortest race in both her freshman and sophomore seasons before succumbing to Moore’s power and burst out of the gate as a junior.
“She’s winning races in the first 20-meters,” Wichita Heights girls track coach Bryan Chadwick said of Moore’s quick starts. “She is so powerful now. In the beginning she didn’t trust the gun. She was kind of gun shy. Now she’s teaching the younger sprinters how to get out of the blocks quicker.”
“I have to get out quickly,” Moore said. “If I don’t the race might be over. The race is so short that there is no time to make up for it (slow start) at the end. I’m just trying to get to the finish line (first).”
Although she has been able to build a lead and cruise to the finish line in both events this season, Moore has been tested. In fact, Chadwick said any time the Wichita State track recruit runs inside the city limits, there is a chance she could get beat. Running in the (Wichita) City League has a way of testing a sprinters moxie. The senior wouldn’t have it any other way.
“If you can’t compete against great competition before state, then you really shouldn’t compete at state,” she said.
Moore won last season’s 6A 100-meter race with a time of 11.95 seconds and took the 200-meters with a clocking of 24.44 seconds. Now she not only wants a repeat, she strives to break the state meet record in both events. Reestablishing those marks is not a stretch for Moore. It’s just a matter of putting it all together at the right time.
Great Bend’s Tisa Johnson owns the 6A 100-meter record of 11.80 seconds. Jocelyn Bentley (Topeka Highland Park) is in sole possession of the 6A 200-meter mark of 24.40 seconds. Both standards were set in the early 1980s.
As the end of the track season nears its stretch run, Moore has positioned herself atop the Kansas high school track and field leader board. The senior has season best times of 11.88 seconds and 24.97 seconds in the 100 and 200-meter events respectively.
