On paper the Class 4A match-up between top-ranked Topeka Hayden (10-1) and No. 3 Andover Central (9-2) appeared to be the classic contest of the second round of the Kansas state high school football playoffs last weekend.
That's also the way it played out on the field.
It took overtime, but the Wildcats prevailed in a 21-20 triumph following quarterback T. J. McGreevy’s 2-point conversion run that allows Topeka Hayden to host a quarterfinal contest Friday against No. 6 Buhler (9-2).
Andover Central scored first in overtime on a 3-yard run from Keaton LaBanca. Ben French added the PAT kick to give the Jaguars a 20-13 advantage.
But, the Wildcats answered soon after on McGreevy’s 2-yard option plunge on fourth down. McGreevy’s conversion run then assured the Wildcats that they would advance to the quarterfinals.
“We pretty much knew if we scored we were going to go for two on that (same play),” McGreevy told the Topeka Capital Journal. “Coach told me I had the option to run or pass. I saw it open up, and I knew I had to get in.”
Hayden scored first on John Bannister’s 26-yard run and then sent the game into overtime when fullback Raymond Gragg scored on a third quarter 5-yard run.
Tyson Hilyard produced Andover Central’s first touchdown on a first quarter 73-yard reception from Jaguar signal caller Cole Blair. In the second quarter, Jayson Hatt gave the Jaguars the lead on a 30-yard run.
Second Round Turnarounds
Olathe North avenged a 14-13 season opening loss to Olathe East in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs with a 22-15 win over the Hawks Friday. The Eagles built a 22-7 halftime advantage and then relied on their defense in the second half.
Olathe East’s JaVon Williams scored the only points in the second half on a 55-yard run.
Kansas City-Turner also pulled a flip-flop in a rematch with Class 5A No. 7 Lansing. Turner, winners of four straight games, rebounded from a 33-0 loss to the Lions during second week action.
Woods Legacy Leads Mill Valley
Since 2000, when Mill Valley High School first opened its doors, there has been a Woods brother listed on the Kaw Valley Conference school’s football roster.
Nicholas Woods, the latest member of the Woods lineage, rushed for 217 yards on 31 carries in Friday’s 33-7 win over Sumner Academy to lead the Jaguars (9-1) to a quarterfinal match up against No. 4 Gardner-Edgerton (9-1) this weekend.
The trip to the round of eight marks the first time George Radell will take the Jaguars to the quarterfinals. With the 26-point win over the Sabres, Mill Valley has secured a school record of nine wins in a season.
