Eight active coaches across high school basketball have surpassed the 1,000 wins mark over the course of their legendary careers. The newest member of the 1,000-win club, Billy Hicks of Scott County (Georgetown, Ky.), eclipsed the prestigious mark this season in what turned out to be his final year on the bench.
After telling reporters he was "99 percent sure" the state title game defeat to Trinity was his last game, Hicks made it definite, saying; "This was my last game. I didn't want to say it in front of everybody. But this was it,"
he told Mike Fields of KentuckyToday.com.
If this season was indeed Hicks' last, Danny Broussard of St. Thomas More (Lafayette, La.) is set to maintain the trend of eight active coaches with at least 1,000 career wins next season. Broussard sits 11 wins short, at 989 career victories, headed into the 2019-20 campaign.
The coach with the most active wins, Steve Smith of Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), also owns the best win percentage on this list – with an amazing .937 winning percentage over his 34 years.
Smith amassed a 1,138-76 record over the course of his career, building Oak Hill into a basketball powerhouse, winning nine national championships since taking the helm in 1985.
The 1,138 career victories are good for third all-time according to the NFHS record book, putting him 195 wins short of the all-time mark set by Robert Hughes, who retired in 2005 with 1,333 careers wins at two schools.
Over the course of his career, Smith has averaged 33.5 wins per season. He would pass Hughes in six seasons if Smith's teams continued to win at that rate.
Nipping at Smith's heels for the most active wins in high school basketball is legendary Mater Dei head coach Gary McKnight, who is two wins behind the Oak Hill Academy head man. McKnight moved into fourth place on the all-time wins list this season after a 29-5 finish.
Another California legend is set to surpass a major milestone at the start of next season as Ed Azzam of Westchester (Los Angeles) sits at 899 career wins, according to Cal-Hi Sports. Azzam will likely be followed into the 900-win club by Bob Hilmer of North Linn (Troy Mills, Iowa), who has 891 career victories after an undefeated state championship run.
Roughly 35 coaches in the high school ranks have more than 800 career wins. For comparison, there are currently five active Division I college basketball coaches who've eclipsed this mark.
