On Thursday night Jan. 15, MaxPreps representative Andy Auclair traveled to Clarkston, Mich., where the 10th annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the National Guard was scheduled to honor the
Clarkston football team.
MaxPreps and the Michigan Army National Guard arrived about two hours before the ceremony, which was slated to take place at halftime of the varsity basketball game, and set up a display table to showcase the Army National Guard national ranking trophy that would be awarded later that night.
As Andy of MaxPreps and Sergeant Christopher Vedder of the Michigan Army National Guard chatted in the hall, a gentleman walked past towards the entrance to the gym, and SGT Vedder said, "Hey, Coach."
It took me a moment but then I recognized head coach Mark Dantonio of the Rose Bowl Champion Michigan State Spartans. Evidently, the Spartans' coach was here to recruit some small-town talent.
At halftime of the basketball game, SGT Vedder presented Clarkston coach Kurt Richardson and the team with the beautiful Minuteman trophy signifying their national ranking. SGT Vedder congratulated the team on its accomplishments and commended the team on its dedication and hard work throughout the season. The undefeated Wolves finished No. 103 nationally out of over 16,000 schools, and this is the second year in a row being honored on the Tour of Champions.
Clarkston High School is a great host school, well-deserving of the recognition. Coach Richardson and his staff are highly dedicated and are doing a great job. Keep up the great work Wolves!
