3A Region 1 recap September 17, 2013
Fans got a thrill when Josh Berry and Jason Gurley connected against Hatley. The connection went for 75 yards, the longest such play in 3A Region 1 this season.
North Pontotoc moved up to 131 from 190 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Vikings climbed the ranks as a result of besting South Pontotoc 42-13.
Alcorn Central's dynamic duo of Berry and Gurley proved to be unstoppable against the Tigers, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Berry threw for 267 yards and 3 touchdowns and Gurley had 107 yards receiving. Ethan Carmichael helped Alcorn Central's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 72 yards.
The Bears' dynamic duo of Berry and Gurley proved tough for Hatley to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Berry put up the best numbers through the air as Alcorn Central lost to Patrick Schoolar's team.
Gurley was the best wideout in the league this week as Jeff Boren's team lost to the Tigers.
He went 11-25 with 1 interceptions.
Lorenzo Braxton was a key player and the best on defense this week as Belmont fell to Baldwyn. The 6-foot-1 junior.
Jeremy Wilkes was the best running back in 3A Region 1 this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 150 yards as North Pontotoc fell to Hatley. Teammate Marcus Green added to the ground attack by rushing for 68 yards.
6-foot-2 quarterback Trey Jolly of Brian Sutton's team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 753. He has also thrown 7 touchdowns. The leading receiver in the league this season is Gurley. The Alcorn Central star has 11 catches for 257 yards.
The Vikings took down the Cougars 42-13 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jolly threw for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 29 yards in the win.
