A stellar winter sports season that included boys and girls basketball championships in the largest enrollment division in Georgia has vaulted
Norcross (Ga.) to the top of the MaxPreps Cup standings.
Norcross leads the pack with 462 points, 15 points ahead of
Carmel (Ind.), which has 447. Norcross also received points for being ranked in the final Xcellent 25 girls basketball rankings and in the fall and for being ranked in the Xcellent 25 football rankings after winning a state title.
The MaxPreps Cup ranks the top high school athletic programs throughout the country based on their success in a variety of sports. Schools are awarded points for finishing first or second at the state level (or the equivalent if a state does not hold a state championship in that sport) in a particular sport. Each sport has weighted point values (football being weighted more than tennis) while each state has a weighted value and each enrollment division has a weighted value. Schools also receive points for being ranked in the final top 25 national rankings of the sport.
The current MaxPreps Cup standings include results for football, boys and girls cross country, volleyball, boys and girls basketball and wrestling. Standings will likely change drastically in the spring, however, as we add baseball, softball and boys and girls tennis, swimming, track and field, golf and soccer to the mix.
Webb (Knoxville, Tenn.), which was in first place after the fall sports points were calculated, is in third place with 434 points while
St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta) is close behind with 424 points.
Ensworth (Nashville, Tenn.) joins the list at No. 5 with 395 points while
Hoover (Ala.) has 380. Rounding out the top 10 are
St. Thomas More (Lafayette, La.) with 344 points,
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) with 338,
Allen (Texas) with 315 and
Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.) with 312.
