5A Region IV District 29 recap October 8, 2013
Eagle Pass scaled the state rankings by moving to 714 from 817 this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region IV District 29. The Eagles climbed the ranks as a result of beating United South 19-10.
United took down Laredo LBJ 38-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Derek Esparza threw for 188 yards and 45 touchdowns and ran for 81 yards in the win.
Isaac Cabello was a passing and rushing force as the Panthers lost to Eagle Pass. He completed 16 passes for 153 yards and also ran for 144 yards. Cabello's favorite target this week was Julian Yzaguire, who caught 6 passes for 66 yards.
Cabello was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 144 yards on 17 carries as United South topped Del Rio. Miguel Lopez also contributed to the rushing game with 30 yards on the ground.
United's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Longhorns feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Esparza has thrown for 1,517 yards and 61 touchdowns this season, while Eric Corona has 39 catches for 542 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Winn takes on the Bulldogs. The Mavericks are currently in fifth, while Alexander is in second.
Joel Lopez's team and the Rams played the closest game in 5A Region IV District 29 this week, with Joel Lopez's team eventually emerging with a 10-7 victory. Aaron Swain threw for 196 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 17 yards during the win.
