The CIF State Track and Field Championships are always one of the top showcases for the sport at the high school level, but it's not every year that the event produces a pair of national records.
Jeshua Anderson of Taft (Woodland Hills) and Tori Anthony of Castilleja (Palo Alto) helped make the 2007 meet held at Sacramento City College a memorable one by breaking national high school records in the boys' 300 meter hurdles and girls' pole vault, respectively.
Anderson, who has signed with Washington State for football, blew away the previous record mark of 35.32 by George Porter of Lompoc Cabrillo (Calif.) in 1985 by blazing to a 35.28. He also finished fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.82, helping Taft to an eighth place team finish.
Anthony outdistanced the rest of the field in the pole vault by almost two feet, vaulting 14-01 feet. The previous record 13-09 was set in 2005 by Mary Saxer of New York.
Bryshon Nellum's victories in the 200 (20.43) and 400 meter (45.54) races, and contributions to winning squads in the 4x100 (40.81) and 4x400 (3:10.92) relays helped Long Beach Poly take the boys' overall title. It marked the Jackrabbits' ninth state track title.
Mt. Pleasant of San Jose took the girls' title, thanks in large part to the efforts of Vashti Thomas and Jeneba Tarmoh. Thomas, a junior, ran the third-fastest time in the 100 meter hurdles in state history at 13.03, while Tarmoh swept the 100 (11.27) and 200 (23.20) meter sprints.
