Christian LeMay, one of the nation’s top incoming senior quarterbacks on one of the nation’s top teams (
Butler HS, Matthews, N.C.), faces a possible 30-day school “code of conduct” suspension, according to published reports and confirmed by LeMay’s family on Monday.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound standout who has committed to Georgia, met with a disciplinary committee at school Monday in Charlotte and afterward his father, Rev. Stacy LeMay, issued a statement to the press. A decision on his son's possible suspension will be made by the Charlotte-Mecklenberg school board in the next 10 days.
“Recently, Christian, in a momentary lapse in good judgment, yielded to an out-of-character decision that he is not proud of,” part of the statement read. “Like many of us, we are sure, he will look back on this time with regret as well as having gained a valuable learned experience.”
LeMay is ranked the No. 12 player overall from the Class of 2011, according to MaxPreps.com recruiting expert Tom Lemming. He passed for 3,291 yards, 44 touchdowns and just two interceptions last year and also rushed for 577 and four more scores.
His Bulldogs went 15-0 and won a state championship in 2009. Butler was ranked No. 2 in the MaxPreps Top 25 early contenders feature that debuted earlier this month.
If LeMay is suspended an entire month, he could miss up to four games.
Any time away could allow talented sophomore Riley Ferguson to develop. According to head coach Mike Newsom, Ferguson received an offer from LSU when he was a freshman and is more advanced than LeMay at the same age.
Either way, LeMay’s younger brother Uriah LeMay, a rising junior, should be the team’s top target. He already has offers from Auburn and Clemson.
According to the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Christian LeMay is on schedule to graduate from Butler after the fall semester and enroll at Georgia early. The North Carolina Player of the Year is not only considered the nation’s No. 2 quarterback behind Ohio State-commit
Braxton Miller (
Wayne HS, Huber Heights, Ohio), but is considered a superb leader and scholar.
No one is saying what the alleged violation is, but Georgia coach Mark Richt will likely take a hard look at when revealed.
Here is Stacy LeMay’s full written statement to the media:
“We would first like to thank so many of you who have shown your love, support and rendered prayers for our family at this time. The overwhelming outpouring of community affection has been tremendous. Christian is the oldest of our four children and as parents we could not have asked nor designed a more special young man then himself. He has for 17 years lead by example and done remarkably well with the responsibility. We truly believe that children are a joy and one of the most precious gifts we could ever receive from God.“Yet sometimes, despite all the teachings and training there comes a time in every individuals life in which they are faced with choices. In a perfect world our children would always make right choices. However, reality says sometimes they may make a decision that is unwise and youthful in nature. Recently Christian, in a momentary lapse in good judgment, yielded to an out-of-character decision that even he is not proud of. Like many of us, we are sure, he will look back on this time with regret as well as having gained a valuable learned experience.“For seventeen years Christian has been a model child, exemplary student and a wonderful asset to his community. He has been giving, encouraging others, loving and honoring to all who know him. We are standing with our Son to provide love and support and to insure his successful progression from this point. We would also like to thank CMS for their student care and academic concern towards this matter. We trust that Christian will emerge stronger from this experience and regain the faith of all his supporters. We thank all of you for your continued prayers and are believing for the best.”SincerelyThe LeMay Family
