Video: Top 10 Plays of the Year
Steve Montoya breaks down the top plays from the 2017-18 winter sports season.
The 2017-18 Fall Sports version of the MaxPreps Cup is looking very much like the 2016-17 model, but with a slight twist.
Last year, Green Hope (Cary, N.C.) surged to the lead in the MaxPreps Cup, which ranks the overall athletic performance of high school sports programs, behind state championships by the boys soccer team and the girls volleyball team, along with runner-up finishes by the boys and girls cross country teams and the girls tennis team.
Fast forward to 2017-18 and Green Hope is still in first place behind three state championships and a runner-up finish. The girls tennis and boys cross country teams took that extra step in the fall of 2017, winning state titles after finishing second last year. The girls volleyball team, meanwhile, won its second straight state title. The girls cross country finished second for the second straight year.
Green Hope has an impressive total of 867 points, which were accumulated through several categories that award points for first or second place in a state championship, the type of sport that is played, the size of the state and the state playoff enrollment division. Schools from larger states get more points due to the increased competition throughout the state. Schools also get more points for playing in playoff enrollment divisions with more students per school.
This year, MaxPreps has added a fifth category — number of schools in the state playoff enrollment division. This was done in order to reward schools that play in playoff divisions with 200 or more teams compared to those that might play in playoff divisions with less than 50 schools.
The MaxPreps Cup has also added the number of sports used to calculate the final totals. Any sport that is played in at least 10 different states was added to the mix. These include bowling, skiing, ice hockey, indoor track, field hockey and gymnastics. The list of sports were also separated into five categories (instead of two) based on their participation numbers produced by the National Federation of High Schools. Different point totals were awarded for each category.
Points are also awarded for placement in national rankings. The MaxPreps Cup uses the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and computer rankings rankings for football, volleyball, and boys and girls soccer and Dye stat's national rankings for boys and girls cross country.
Green Hope sits 41 points ahead of No. 2 Haddonfield (N.J.), which won five state or sectional titles in New Jersey this fall. La Salle Academy (Providence, R.I.) comes in third with 792 points and four state titles. Fayetteville (Ark.), which won four state crowns, is No. 4 with 779 points while Wayzata (Minn.) is No. 5 with 776 points and three state titles.
Following are the top 100 teams in the 2017-18 Fall Sports MaxPreps Cup rankings. Teams are listed with their state championships, their state runner-up finishes and any sports where they were nationally ranked. Highlights have also been provided for the top 10 schools.
