6-foot-7, 215-pound senior wide receiver Jake Maulhardt
caught a California state-record 28 passes during Friday's 52-28 football loss to Canyon (Canyon Country).
The Los Angeles Daily News reported that the former record was 26 catches by Fullerton's David Sepulveda in 1984. His yardage total (345) is No. 2 in Southern Section history and No. 4 in state history.
His 28 receptions also place him No. 3 in national history. The record of 32 has stood since 1942.
On the throwing end of Maulhardt's record-setting night was sophomore quarterback Michael Marin
. The 5-8, 160-pounder completed 42 of 57 passes for 447 yards and four touchdowns – three to Maulhardt.
The start of the game was delayed for an hour due to lightning.
