Clearfield (Pa.) grabbed the lead when
Spencer Herrington kicked a field goal with 3:00 left in the fourth quarter and held on to upset
Central (Martinsburg, Pa.) 34-33 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured nine lead swaps.
The Bison led 17-14 at halftime, but the Dragons recaptured the lead on a
Austin Cunningham touchdown pass to
Bradi Moore with 10:00 left in the third.
Clearfield expanded its lead to four points entering the fourth quarter. The Bison scored two times in the third, including once on a
Christian Lezzer touchdown run.
Central missed three extra point attempts in the loss.
The Martinsburg school's Cunningham was the standout player for his team. The junior quarterback threw two touchdowns, ran for one touchdown and caught two touchdowns. He has now scored nine touchdowns on the season.
Lezzer was the top performer for Clearfield. The junior quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.
The Bison also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 27-20.
The loss comes after Central defeated Tyrone 28-0 last week. With the win Clearfield extended its winning streak to three games. The loss snapped the Dragons' 2-game winning streak.
Clearfield (3-0) will play a Mountain game against Huntingdon next week, while Central (2-1) will take on Penns Valley Area also in a Mountain game.
