David Thompson told University of Miami (Fla.) coaches this week that he will play both football and baseball for the Hurricanes following graduation.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Thompson had committed to Miami as a sophomore to play baseball, but this week he also received a football offer and decided to try both sports, his father, Ed Thompson, told MaxPreps.
"He was one of two QBs they selected from the class of 2012," Ed Thompson said. "New coach Al Golden said he has worked things out with the baseball head coach, Jim Morris, to enable David to do both – a rare occurrence at UM from what I understand.
"Then he was invited to play in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field in August – one of 36 players. Another great honor and opportunity. So, David's feet haven't touched the ground for a few days."
Thompson, who was named the
MaxPreps Sophomore Baseball Player of the Year, is coming off a season during which he batted .486, drove in 54 runs and tied the Florida home run record with 19. He has been a catalyst for two consecutive Class 2A state championship teams.
Last fall he completed 62 percent of his passes and had a total offense of 2,583 yards with 22 touchdowns.
Thompson, who has a 4.7 weighted GPA, also is currently averaging 16 points and 13 rebounds in basketball.
