Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.)
head coach Michael Peck and assistant Todd Simon confirmed Thursday that Pilot senior Winston Shepard
is headed to San Diego State.
Prior to his Aztec pledge, Shepard was one of only a dozen MaxPreps Class of 2012 Top 100 prospects yet to make a decision. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound wing-forward is rated No. 32 on the aforementioned list and averaging around 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists per game for the 23-1 Pilots.
Shepard arrived at Findlay Prep as a sophomore, spending his freshman year at Fort Bend Hightower (Missouri City, Texas). Initially viewed as a hyper-athletic four man, he morphed into a wing with the ability to defend any position on the floor.
"He's made tremendous strides in his time here, not just basketball-wise but as a person and a student," Peck said. "For us he's at the end of the road. He's kind of learned everything, absorbed everything and flourished. He's ready to take that next step and for him that's going to be at San Diego State."
According to Peck, Shepard is routinely assigned the opposition's top offensive threat.
"What a luxury to have somebody like him that can guard 1 through 5," Peck said. "We don't have to spend a ton of time figuring out who we are going to put on their main guy."
Shepard joins an Aztec recruiting class that includes Skylar Spencer
of Price (Los Angeles)
and local product Matt Shrigley
of La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad)
More major recruiting news is expected to come out of Findlay Prep in the coming weeks. Anthony Bennett
, a 6-7, 235-pound McDonald's All-American rated No. 19 in the MaxPreps Class of 2012 Top 100, is expected to choose between Florida, Kentucky, Oregon, UNLV and Washington.
