MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Sparrows Point (MD) Pointers have officially been named to the 11th Annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its fifth year honoring girls soccer.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For soccer, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 34,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Pointers ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
In 2013 Sparrows Point girls soccer captured its first MPSSAA Class 1A state championship in school history and in 2014 the Pointers won its first Baltimore County title along with a second consecutive state title. In 2015 with the return of a roster dominated by three- and four-year starters, the back-to-back state champions earned their third straight state title and second straight Baltimore County crown.
The Pointers claimed the Baltimore title in an impressive fashion on Oct. 27 with a 1-1 win over Perry Hall. After 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, Sparrows Point outlasted Perry Hall in an epic penalty kick shootout for the win. Senior goalkeeper Madison Anthony scored the game-winning PK after a huge save in the 11th round of the shootout.

With momentum on their side the unbeaten Pointers notched four more wins in the
2015 MPSSAA Class 1A playoffs to set up an opportunity to become three-time state champions. On Nov. 20 the girls soccer squad blanked Patterson Mill (2-0) to complete its perfect 17-0 season and won its third straight MPSSAA Class 1A state crown.
In the opening minute of the state final matchup the Pointers' only new starter this season, freshman Julie Lynch scored the team's first goal with a shot from 25 yards. All-Metro senior Jamie Shiflett added the insurance goal late in the game to secure the 2-0 win.
Sparrows Point extended its winning streak to 32 after its undefeated season and finished ranked No. 7 in the nation, No. 2 in Maryland and No. 1 in Class 1A.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Sparrows Point Pointers an invitation to the 11th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the girls soccer team, coaching staff, students and fans on Thursday, Feb. 18 during the community celebration in the gym.
