Michael Porter Jr. of
Nathan Hale (Seattle, Wash.) verbally committed to Washington on Friday afternoon.
Porter announced his pledge via Twitter.
With Duke and Kentucky monopolizing much of the nation's elite talent in recent years, a top prospect heading to Washington (which hasn't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2011) comes as a bit of a surprise.
But Husky head coach Lorenzo Romar set the table for the move by hiring Porter's father as an assistant back in May. Washington also has a commitment from younger brother
Jontay Porter – a 6-foot-9 forward in the 2018 class.
Michael, a 6-9, 210-pound small forward, helped
Father Tolton (Columbia) win a state title in Missouri last season. He will play at Nathan Hale for former Husky and NBA standout Brandon Roy as a senior.
Last week at the prestigious Peach Jam in South Carolina, Porter shared MVP honors with teammate Trae Young as MoKan Elite ran the table (7-0) en route to the title. The Wichita-based club thrashed the PSA Cardinals of New York City 93-65 in the final.
Porter averaged 26.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per game at the event including 33 in the championship game victory.
