Harrisonville cross country standout Maksim Korolev is making quite a name for himself lately. The senior won his third straight invitational at last weekend’s prestigious Rim Rock High School Cross Country Classic at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan.
Korolev’s winning time of 15 minutes, 40.21 seconds over the 5K course in the meet’s gold division lands him on the DyeStat.com Elite 100 list for breaking the 16-minute barrier. In winning the event, which also holds crimson and blue divisions for both boys and the girls, Korolev battled mainly himself for the majority of the race before bettering a field of 207 runners from Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado and beyond by more than 18 seconds.
"It was pretty difficult in the sense that I was running by myself," Korolev told the Kansas City Star. "The first two miles I felt pretty good and I was pushing myself pretty well, but the third mile was pretty hilly… I was trying to find motivation and it was hard to do it because nobody was around me, and it’s a pretty tough part of the course."
Lawrence’s Roy Wedge joined Korolev on the DyeStat 100 list by finishing second in a time of 15:58.71. Riley Woodward of Wamego (Kan.) finished third in 16:14.76. Liberty won the team title over St. Louis University High, while Mulvane (Kan.) was third. Topeka Washburn Rural (Kan.) runner Avery Clifton won the girls gold division by completing the 4K course in a time of 14:40.92. Maize (Kan.) runner Danielle Walker turned in a runner-up time of 15:28.98, while Liberty’s Megan Yohe finished third in 15:36.16.
Woodlands College Preparatory (Texas), Iowa City West and Jefferson City finished 1-2-3 in the girls gold team standings.
Brookfield, Clark County receive invitations to join CCC
Brookfield and Clark County applied for membership to the Clarence Cannon Conference at the league’s fall meeting in August, and recently received a resounding 7-1 yes by the league’s eight member schools. Now the ball is in the other court. The school boards of both schools are set to meet on Friday to discuss whether or not to join forces with Macon, Centralia, Palmyra, Highland, Mark Twain, Monroe City, South Shelby and Louisiana.
Should the Bulldogs and Indians make it official this weekend, the Tri-Valley conference members will begin competition in their new league during the 2010-11 fall season.
"The CCC would likely be divided into ‘large’ and ‘small’ divisions, based on the enrollment of each school," Centralia athletic director David Meyers told the Macon Chronicle Herald. "Macon, for example, having the most students, would be placed in the large division."
Daues Reels in Win No. 300
Whitfield boys soccer coach Bill Daues reached 300 wins early last week with a 6-0 win over Affton. Seniors Martin Tobias, Matt Chabot and Kory Clawson scored two goals apiece in the win, as the Warriors improved to 4-2 on the season. Daues, who now owns a 301-183-47 career record, led Whitfield to Class 1 state titles in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and a runner-up finish in 2005.
"To do something like this, you have to love it and you have to love practice even more than the games," Daues told the St. Louis Post Dispatch. "I truly enjoy what I do and hopefully at least some of that rubs off on my players. It’s not so much about motivating; it’s more about inspiring them."
Mound City streak falls to Worth County
In a battle of Missouri 8-Man football powers, Worth County put an end to Mound City’s 16-game winning streak by edging the 3-1 Panthers 22-20 over the weekend. Eli Murdock tied the game with a touchdown run with about four minutes left, and Cody Green put Worth County (5-0) ahead when he reeled in the tipped conversion pass. Mound City last lost when Worth County handed the Panthers a 30-22 defeat on Nov. 10, 2007 in the semifinals of the Missouri 8-Man state football playoffs. The Tigers finished the 2007 campaign with a 12-0 record and as state champions following a 70-6 win over Hardin-Central.
In 2008, Mound City finished the season 13-0 and won the state title to begin the streak. Then, the Panthers won three straight games to begin the 2009 campaign.
