On the schedule
Want to catch a game this week? Here are a few regular-season games that are worth the drive:
Thursday: Littleton (6-3) will be at Ralston Valley (6-3) in what amounts to a playoff game out of the Class 4A North Metro League. Littleton is 21st in wild-card points this week; Ralston Valley is 15th. The loser almost certainly will be home for the postseason, while the winner could find its way into the brackets.
Friday: The marquee regular-season game of the weekend pits top-ranked Faith Christian (9-0) at Erie (8-1) in a matchup of Class 2A heavyweights in the Flatirons League. A Faith Christian win gives the Eagles the league title outright, as well as the expected top seed in the postseason, while an Erie victory likely forges a three-way league tie with Holy Family. Faith Christian won last season's meeting 28-13, a game in which the Eagles limited Erie standout Alex Ortega to 81 yards. It was his lowest output of the season. Ortega is the third-leading rusher in 2A this season with 1,579 yards and 21 TDs. The Faith Christian defense has allowed only 34 points all season.
Watching that game closely figures to be defending 2A state champion Olathe (9-0), which can close out its second consecutive undefeated season with a victory at home against Grand Valley (7-2). The Pirates have won 23 in a row, now the longest streak in the state.
In Class 4A, Durango (8-1) will be at Montrose (8-1), with the winner claiming what should be an automatic berth in the postseason. The 4A seeding committee has the choice to award an automatic berth to a 4A team from the 5A/4A Southwestern League if it finishes first or tied for first or second in league. The loser shouldn't worry too much about its playoff standing. Durango is fifth, Montrose fourth in the updated wild-card points.
Pueblo Central (9-0) can close out a perfect regular season as well, and in doing so would claim the Class 3A Southern League championship. The Wildcats have a one-game lead over Falcon and Pueblo County, which they face in the finale. A Pueblo County win forces a three-way tie between the teams.
Also of note this night is D'Evelyn and Valor Christian in the Class 3A Metro League title game. Undefeated Valor Christian beat the Jaguars 14-13 in the season opener (with the missed extra point the difference), as Brock Berglund passed for 180 yards.
In case you missed it: Chaparral's Spencer Duran finished as the leading rusher in Class 5A with 1,496 yards during the regular season, boosting his total with a 268-yard effort, which included four touchdowns, in a 35-21 win against Palmer. In that game, the Wolverines defense also totaled 12 sacks (three by David Beauman) and had five interceptions. The Wolverines (7-2) are the seventh seed in the playoffs . . . Yuma, which ended Akron's 46-game win streak a week ago, clinched its first league championship since 1980 with a 56-12 victory against Highland. The Indians, champions of the North Central League, are the No. 1 seed in the Class A playoffs . . . Conifer's Jake Schroppel amassed six sacks for the Lobos in a 41-0 win against Arvada . . . Despite playing with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, Cherry Creek quarterback Kain Colter again displayed his versatility in a 17-14 loss at Cherokee Trail. Colter, a senior who has committed to Stanford, passed for 143 yards and rushed for 168 yards (and two scores) to account for 311 of the Bruins' 340 total yards.
Etc.: This is the final week of the regular season for Class 4A, 3A and 2A. All other classifications begin the playoffs this week.
