U.S. Soccer made a decision on Friday that will make a major impact on high school soccer starting in the fall of 2012.
The U.S. Soccer Development Academy will move to a 10-month season, running from September through June. It could even go into July based on post-season play. Officials, who say they have great support for the longer season, believe this is necessary to compete with foreign powers.
That means elite players will have to choose between playing for their high school or for the academy, since the Academy season will completely envelop the high school season. They will not be allowed to play both in the future.
*Two of the top five girls soccer teams in the nation both were dealt their first defeats on Friday. Carroll (Southlake, Texas), ranked No. 2 by the National Soccer Coaches Association, was nipped by
Coppell (Texas) 1-0, while No. 5 Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) was edged by
Plano West (Plano, Texas) 2-1.
