Fort Zumwalt West quarterback David Washko rushed and threw his way to 413 yards of total offense in Friday's 41-38 win over Francis Howell North, single-handedly outgaining the Knights by nearly 100 yards.
But his near-flawless efforts weren’t the big story of the evening. Washko and his Jaguars teammates found themselves on the wrong end of a 31-13 score about midway through the third quarter. Then the rally began.
Howell North signal-caller Jake Schneider connected with Andre Wooten for a 32-yard scoring strike to put the Knights up by 18 points with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, and in the process awoke a sleeping giant.
Washko, who rushed for 302 yards on a workhorse effort of 41 carries, then went to work. The senior scored on an 11-yard run less than two minutes after Wooten’s score, and then added a 2-yard bolt 25 seconds before the end of the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 31-27. Less than two minutes into the final quarter, Kyle Echols reeled in a 22-yard pass from Washko and the Jaguars led for the first time in the game, 35-31.
Washko then scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the game on a 15-yard run with 2:35 remaining to put Fort Zumwalt West up 41-31. Wooten rounded out the scoring when he reeled in a 33-yard strike from Schneider. The Jaguars were able to recover the ensuing onside kick and run out the clock.
"For as young as we are, that’s really a tough position to be in," Fort Zumwalt West head coach Paul Day told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "But I really have to hand it to our kids, and especially our seniors. They wouldn’t let this team quit; they just kept making play after play, and we fortunately found a way to pull it out."
With the win, Fort Zumwalt West improved to 3-1 on the season, while Francis Howell North evened its record at 2-2. The Jaguars are close to moving back into the Missouri Class 6 rankings.
