Bucknuts & JJHuddle Ohio HS Girls Athlete of the Year Nominees
* Athena Welsh, Aquinas (Louisville) Track & FieldThe senior became the second Stark County runner in history to sweep the 1,600 meters and 3,200 at the state meet when she won both in D-III. It was her third-straight 1,600 title and first in the 3,200. She was also a member of STA’s 3,200 relay, which set a D-III state and state meet record (9 minutes, 0.84 seconds). STA won the team title for the second-straight season. In cross country, Welsh was the D-III state champion and led STA to its first state title.
* Claire Schuerman, Archbishop Alter (Kettering) Swimming & Diving The Auburn recruit won her third-straight D-II state diving title in her senior season.
* Malia Berkely, Badin (Hamilton) SoccerThe Florida State recruit and two-time Ohio Ms. Soccer (2014 and 2015) ended her career with 66 goals and 33 assists, plus two D-III state titles (2013 and 2014).
* Jensen Caretti, River (Hannibal) Basketball The Ohio State recruit was named AP’s Ms. Basketball winner, as she averaged 25.1 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals en route to earning All-Eastern District Player of the Year honors as a senior.
* Kendall Meeks, Alexander (Albany) SoftballThe senior hit 14 home runs this season (seventh-most in state history) to become the state’s all-time leader in that category with 48 for her career. She batted .566 and was named first team all-Ohio as a pitcher.
* Hunter Atherton, Dublin Coffman VolleyballThe MaxPreps all-American and Nebraska recruit was named first team all-Ohio for the second-straight season after registering 734 assists, 171 digs and 146 kills as senior. She led her team to a No. 1 ranking and D-I state final.
