In case you missed it: Now, this is what the 32-team bracket is all about, finally. Since the playoffs were expanded from 16 to 32 in Class 5A a few years ago, the first round largely was filled with blowouts by the higher-seeded teams. This season, though, seven teams who would not have made the postseason under the old format scored first-round victories to shake up the brackets.
While the Nos. 17 through 20 seeds scored what technically could be termed upsets, state followers weren't surprised by those outcomes. Even 22nd-seeded Bear Creek's win at No. 11 Highlands Ranch and No. 24 Cherry Creek eliminating ninth-seeded Chatfield didn't raise many eyebrows. But the opening-round win by No. 29 Eaglecrest at fourth-seeded Fort Collins certainly highlighted the type of season it has been week to week — unpredictable. We can't wait for Round 2.
Here are a few other highlights from last week: Miami-Yoder piled up 589 yards of offense (486 rushing, 103 passing) in a 62-42 Class A 8-Man playoff victory at Swink. Shane Reed rushed for 222 yards and three TDs, while backfield mate Nick Bonser added 209 yards and two scores on the ground . . . Sheridan's Mandrick Holifield rushed for 291 yards and four scores in a 55-24 season-closing win against Denver Christian . . . Platte Canyon running back Mikey Gunkel amassed 217 rushing yards and three TDs on only six carries in a 54-0 win against Clear Creek. The Huskies (10-0) are the third seed in the Class 2A playoffs . . .
Arvada West quarterback Gavin Glanz was his usual efficient self, completing 11-of-13 passes for 273 yards and five TDs to lead the Wildcats to a 5A first-round victory against Gateway . . . Doherty's Mark Jones closed his season with a 291-yard rushing effort that included six TDs in a 41-7 win against Palmer . . Longmont's Jake Johnson proved his versatility in a 29-0 win against rival Niwot. Johnson, an all-state quarterback, passed for 175 yards, but also had two sacks, forced a fumble and had an interception. The Trojans are seeded 11th in the 4A playoffs . . . Jesse Geary of Mountain Vista paced the Golden Eagles to the second round of the 5A playoffs, rushing for 149 yards and four TDs against Overland.
