Best Player: Jim Noel, Sr., CB, Everett
A star in one of Massachusetts’ most dominant programs, Jim Noel is a shutdown corner for the Crimson Tide. He’s one of the top secondary prospects to come out of the Bay State in a long time. Returning Stat Leaders – Passing: Ray Doucette, Cambridge-Rindge and Latin, 190-292, 2,914 yards, 26 TDs; Rushing: Ryan Izzo, Walpole, 285-1,999 yards, 33 TDs.
Best All Time Player: Doug Flutie, Natick High School
It’s hard to pick against Doug Flutie, who was born in Maryland but spent his teenage years in Massachusetts. He lettered in three different sports at Natick High School, and attended Boston College, where he won a Heisman Trophy and threw the most famous pass in college football history. He had NFL stints with several different teams, and was one of the league’s most loved personalities during his playing days.
2008 Must See: Everett Title Run
Can Everett complete a three-peat? The Crimson Tide lose star running back Isaac Johnson, who will play for Boston College next season, and lead offensive lineman Patrick McGrath. They do return ballhawking cornerback Jim Noel, a 6-foot-2 senior who will also be a B.C. Eagle. Everett has not lost since 2006, but another undefeated season won’t be easy. If anyone can do it, however, it is head coach John DiBiaso, Jr., who has reached legendary status in Everett.
On The Throne: Longmeadow
Longmeadow won the 2007 Division 1 Central/Western Massachusetts Super Bowl. They’ve also won 37 consecutive games and eight postseason titles in 11 years. Head coach Alex Rotsko has led the Lancers to 10 straight Central/Western Massachusetts Super Bowls, and shows no signs of slowing down.
Best Rivalry: Boston English vs. Boston Latin
The Thanksgiving Day game between Boston Latin, America’s oldest public high school, and English High School is always a spectacle, never mind the fact that Latin has dominated the series since the 60’s. It is believed to be America’s oldest continual Thanksgiving game. The two teams have met each year since 1887.
Future Star: Ryan Izzo, Jr., RB, Walpole
Ryan Izzo lived up to all the hype as a sophomore running back at Walpole this season. In 13 games, he ran for over 2,000 yards and scored 33 touchdowns. In a win against Wellesley, Izzo amassed 270 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He will be one of the most exciting players in the state for the next two years.
Fun Fact
One of Massachusetts’ finest coaches recently received a much deserved honor. Lincoln-Sudbury head coach Tom Lopez was inducted into the Massachusetts State High School Football Association Hall of Fame in April. In 30 years as head coach, Lopez has compiled an impressive record of 213-91-4. He’s taken the Warriors to six Super Bowls, and has won three.
