With the completion of the Minnesota high school baseball state championships on Monday, the 2012 national baseball season has come to a close. Finishing the season right where they started are the Bishop Gorman Gaels.
Coach Nick Day's team began the season ranked No. 1 in the Xcellent 25 National Baseball Rankings and that's where it finishes the season after winning a seventh-straight Nevada Class 4A state title and collecting 40 wins - the most of any team in the Xcellent 25.
According to the statistics posted on MaxPreps, Bishop Gorman also led the nation in runs with 476, home runs with 57 and RBIs with 413.
A look back at the Gaels' past five seasons (for which MaxPreps has stats) shows an incredible run. From 2008 to 2012, Bishop Gorman averaged 500 runs a season. No other team in the country has scored more than 500 runs during that stretch. The Gaels have also averaged 69 home runs a year in that time and have finished among the top three teams in the country in home runs during each of those seasons.
The Gaels have also averaged just more than 38 wins a season over the past five years with records of 41-3, 40-4, 36-4, 35-5 and this year's mark of 40-3.
This year, the Gaels defeated teams from six different states or countries. They defeated the New Jersey Non-Public A state champion, Gloucester Catholic, on a no-hitter by Joey Gallo.
If not for three bad innings, the Gaels may have gone undefeated. They gave up eight runs in one inning against Mater Dei, five against Gulliver Prep and seven against Arbor View. In only two other games did Bishop Gorman give up at least five runs in an inning and both of those games were blowout wins.
The Gaels also had two players selected in the MLB draft with Joey Gallo selected by the Texas Rangers in the sandwich rounds and Johnny Sewald going to the Orioles on the third day.
Here's a look at the rest of the final MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Baseball Rankings.
Carroll had plenty of reason to celebrate this season, as it climbed up to No. 2 in the Xcellent 25.
