DURHAM, N.C. -- USA Baseball and MaxPreps announced on Monday, the USA Baseball MaxPreps Pitcher and Player of the Week Award winners for the week of May 9, 2016, bringing national recognition to the top-performing high school athletes in the country.
Representing eight national regions, -- Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest and West -- players are selected based upon stats that are submitted to MaxPreps.com by coaches and team administrators. For players to be nominated each week, their coach must enter the athlete's game stats into MaxPreps by Sunday evening. High school coaches may obtain an access code to enter stats for their teams at maxpreps.com/cl.
The winners for USA Baseball MaxPreps Player of the Week Award are as follows:
Great LakesPitcher of the Week: Hunter Wolfe struck out 18 batters for Clay City High School (Clay City, Ind.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Great Lakes Pitcher of the Week. Wolfe, a senior, gave up just one hit and one unearned run on the week.
Player of the Week: Mark DiLuia hit two home runs for Marian Catholic High School (Chicago Heights, Ill.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Great Lakes Player of the Week award. DiLuia, a junior, hit .857 with six RBIs and scored three runs.
Mid-AtlanticPitcher of the Week: Zach Matheny pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball for Cross Lanes Christian High School (Charleston, W.V.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Pitcher of the Week. Matheny, a junior, gave up just one run and struck out 16 batters.
Player of the Week: Ian Riggleman hit .818 for South Harrison High School (Lost Creek, W.V.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Player of the Week award. Riggleman, a senior, went 9-for-11 with four RBIs and scored five runs.
MidwestPitcher of the Week: Peyton Battenfield pitched seven innings of hitless baseball for Verdigris High School (Claremore, Okla.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Midwest Pitcher of the Week. Battenfield, a senior, struck out ten batters and surrendered just one walk.
Player of the Week: Ruendi Moreno hit .857 for Elkhart High School (Elkhart, Kan.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Midwest Player of the Week award. Moreno, a junior, went 6-for-7 with eight RBIs and two home runs.
NortheastPitcher of the Week: Brian Linton threw a complete game no-hitter for Geneseo High School (Geneseo, N.Y) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northeast Pitcher of the Week. Linton, a junior, walked just one batter in the victory.
Player of the Week: Jayson Olivares went a perfect 10-for-10 at the plate for South Amboy High School (South Amboy, N.J.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northeast Player of the Week award. Oliveras, a senior, scored nine runs on the week and finished with four RBIs and one home run.
Northwest
Pitcher of the Week: Matt Kelleran struck out 10 batters in six innings for Overlake/Bear Creek High School (Redmond, Wash.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northwest Pitcher of the Week. Kelleran, a senior, gave up just two hits, one walk, and zero runs on the week.
Player of the Week: Jay Onken hit .778 for Pine Creek High School (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Northwest Player of the Week award. Onken, a sophomore, finished the week 7-for-9 with eight runs scored, five RBIs, and three home runs.
SoutheastPitcher of the Week: Gideon McKee struck out 12 batters for John Overton High School (Nashville, Tenn.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southeast Pitcher of the Week. McKee, a senior, gave up two hits, three walks, and no runs in seven innings for the victory.
Player of the Week: Chris Boyle tallied 10 RBIs for St. Andrews Episcopal School (Ridgeland, Miss.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Player of the Week award. Boyle, a junior, went 6-for-8 at the plate with two home runs and three runs scored.
SouthwestPitcher of the Week: Bailey Horn pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball for West High School (West, Texas) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southwest Pitcher of the Week. Horn, a senior, struck out 13 batters, and gave up three hits and one walk in the victory.
Player of the Week: Payton Henry hit .833 for Pleasant Grove High School (Pleasant Grove, Utah) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps Southwest Player of the Week award. Henry, a senior, hit two home runs, tallied seven RBIs and finished the week with a 1.833 slugging percentage.
WestPitcher of the Week: Fernando Rivas pitched a complete game no-hitter for Port of Los Angeles High School (San Pedro, Calif.) to be named the USA Baseball/MaxPreps West Pitcher of the Week. Rivas, a senior, struck out 14 batters he faced in the victory.
Player of the Week: Ryan Hagge went a perfect 9-for-9 for Hillcrest Christian School (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) to earn the USA Baseball/MaxPreps West Player of the Week award. Hagge, a junior, hit five doubles, scored seven runs, and tallied eight RBIs on the week.
