Katy (Texas), and considering the school's football history, that's saying a lot.
The Tigers went 16-0 under head coach Gary Joseph and earned the No. 1 ranking in the Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. Katy won the Texas Class 6A-II state title with a 34-7 win over Lake Travis (Austin) and posted 10 shutouts during the season.
Katy also had one of the highest-scoring offensive units in the state with 778 points scored. With only 62 points allowed, Katy's 716-point differential is also jaw-dropping.
These accomplishments make Joseph the MaxPreps National Football Coach of the Year.
"It's a great deal for the community of Katy," Joseph told the Houston Chronicle following Katy's win over Lake Travis. "There's no doubt that they want to see their kids be successful, and they work really hard to help us make our kids successful."
Joseph has been very successful in his 34 years at Katy, which include 12 years as the head coach of the Tigers. His teams have gone 16-0 three times and he's won four state titles. His career record is an impressive 168-14 and his teams have won the district championship in 11 of his 12 years as head coach.
