Northern Tier 1 recap October 29, 2013
Wellsboro extended the longest winning streak in Northern Tier 1 this week by beating Towanda, 21-14. The victory was the ninth in a row for the Hornets.
Wellsboro scaled the state rankings by moving to 174 from 212 this week, the biggest jump in the league. Matt Hildebrand's team was able to move up by besting the Black Knights 21-14.
North Penn's dynamic duo of Bo Burleigh and Levi Christman proved to be unstoppable against Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Burleigh threw for 194 yards and 5 touchdowns and Christman had 70 yards receiving. Brady Andrews helped North Penn's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 51 yards.
He was 12-17 with 0 interceptions.
The Hornets' Michael Pietropola and Brandon Owlett have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Pietropola has thrown for 2,277 yards this season, while Owlett has 30 catches for 870 yards. Luke Jennings from Wyalusing Valley leads the league in rushing with 1,238 yards.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when Wellsboro's Owlett goes up against the Panthers' Dayton Wood.
Troy's Jed Wright is a mere 47 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 100 carries Wright has accumulated 953 yard this year.
Next week's game between the Hornets and North Penn will feature a good passing match up as Pietropola will test his arm against Wood's defensive ability.
An important game coming up in Northern Tier 1 this week will be when Tom Dickinson's team takes on Wellsboro. The Panthers are currently in third, while the Hornets are in first.
The Trojans took down Hughesville 59-10 last week, the largest margin of any game. Wright ran for 169 yards in the win.
