Fairfield's Wellington Already Over 1,000
Fairfield's high school football team has been a high-powered one on the ground this season, thanks to a young man who ran from war.
Senior running back Wilmot "Will" Wellington has already amassed more than 1,000 yards with only four weeks gone in the season. Wellington set a new Fairfield school record of 365 yards to go with six touchdowns in his team's 48-28 win over Oskaloosa Friday night.
It was his second straight 300-yard performance of the season and puts him at over 1,100 yards for the year. Wilmot came to Fairfield in a round-about way, fleeing his native Liberia at the age of six. After going to Ghana, Wellington came to St. Paul, Minn., where he lived until moving to his brother's home in Fairfield two years ago.
Wellington was ineligible for football last fall, but won the 3-A state 100 meter championship in a time of 11.54 seconds.
Class 4-A Football
Davenport Assumption rebounded from its loss to top-ranked Bettendorf the previous week with a 48-23 victory over previously unbeaten North Scott.
Willie Argo took the opening kickoff back for a 91 yards touchdown for Assumption, which is now 3-1 for the season. Tom Pettis returned a fumble 52 yards for another score as Assumption scored 27 first-half points.
The loss broke a 15-game winning streak by North Scott, which dated back to the last three games of the 2005 season.
Class 2-A Football
Central Lyon/George-Little Rock now has a 15 game winning streak going after Friday's 36-7 victory over Sheldon in a Class 2-A, District 1 showdown.
Both teams were unbeaten going into the contest. The defending state Class 2-A champions from CL/G-LR rode the 213 yard rushing effort of returning quarterback Nate DeJong, who also scored four touchdowns for the Lions, including one that went for 20 yards. Nick Pulscher scored the Orabs' only touchdown on an 88-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.

Ninth-ranked Lawton-Bronson showed some offensive power in a 41-7 win over Boyer Valley last Friday night.

Among his targets were Clayton King and Brady Lakes, who each had 60-yard touchdown receptions. On the ground, Levi Keleher carried the football for 140 yards and a score for the Eagles, now 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Class A District One play.
Madrid won the battle of unbeatens in a 55-0 pasting of Colo-NESCO Friday night, led by a three-touchdown effort of Taylor Christensen, who carried for 118 yards.
Christensen also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score. As a team, Madrid held Colo-NESCO to 105 yards total offense, while gaining 374 yards of their own in posting their fourth straight win of the season. Baseball: East Waterloo Coach Focusing on Administration
East Waterloo baseball coach John Netty has resigned his coaching position to focus on school administration.
Netty is assistant principal and athletic director at Logan Middle School in the Waterloo school district, which typically does not allow its administrators to coach. So, Netty is giving up the coaching position after nine years leading the Trojans' summer baseball program.
Netty helped revitalize a floundering Trojans' baseball team by coaching five all-state players and winning Mississippi Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors four years ago.
Softball: Hall-of-Famer Taking Over at Dowling
An Iowa high school coaching Hall-of-Famer is taking the reins of the West Des Moines Dowling program for next summer.
Don Menke will also be a substitute teacher at Dowling, as activities director Mike Ketchum told the Des Moines Register newspaper. Menke previously coached at Estherville, Des Moines Hoover and Marion Linn-Mar.
Menke's career record is 622-210 and includes six state tournament appearances. He takes over for John Wilkinson, who resigned. Dowling's last state championship came under Wilkinson three years ago.
