MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
Overland (CO) Trailblazers have officially been named to the 11th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its 10th year honoring boys basketball.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the MaxPreps National Rankings. For basketball, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with over 40,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Trailblazers ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
Defending Class 5A state champion Overland went into the 2015-16 season as a Colorado preseason boys basketball
Fab 5 team as they were expected to contend for a second straight title. 28 games and 25 wins later, the Trailblazers fulfilled all expectations and claimed back-to-back CHSAA Class 5A championships.
En route to the state finals the Blazers faced little resistance in the
2016 CHSAA Class 5A state tournament as they shot past Liberty (64-32), Doherty (69-50) and Chatfield (72-50). On Saturday, Mar. 12 the co-Centennial League champions, Overland and Eaglecrest, went head-to-head for the third time this season. The teams split the previous two games, but with the state title on the line, the Trailblazers overcame the Raptors with a 66-56 win for their second consecutive championship which capped the season at 25-3. The win gave the program its 10th straight postseason win and it also extended the team's 13-game winning streak.
At the end of the season, head coach Danny Fisher and the Blazers finished ranked No. 12 in the nation, No. 1 in Colorado, No. 1 in Class 5A and No. 23 in the
Xcellent 25.
These incredible season achievements have earned the Overland Trailblazers an invitation to the 11th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the boys basketball team, coaching staff, students and fans on Friday, Apr. 8 at 2 p.m. during a pep rally in the gym.
