The storied NFL career of Brett Favre is continuing at the high school ranks in Mississippi.
In his second season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at
Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, Miss.), Favre helped lead his team to its seventh straight win Friday night at rival Meridian 38-10.
Oak Grove, No. 1 in Mississippi and 41st in the country according to the
MaxPreps computer rankings, broke open a close game with 24 unanswered points in the second half.
The Warriors came into the game averaging 310 passing yards per game behind senior quarterback
Kirk McCarty (120 of 199 for 1,860 yards and 20 touchdowns).
Favre, of course, knows plenty about the position. He's the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 70,000 yards, 500 touchdowns, 6,000 completions and 10,000 attempts.
According to a New York Times article, Favre lives in the area and his daughter attends Oak Grove, which he often used as a training ground during the offseason of his 20-year career.
His coaching career got off to a resounding start in 2012 with a 64-6 win. The Warriors went 7-4 last season under head coach Neil Barr, who has gone 94-28-1 at Oak Grove since 2004.
Barr asked Favre to coach after his former offensive coordinator took an administrative job.
"I thought, ‘Shoot, let me check with Brett to see if he'd be interested," Barr told the New York Times. "I thought with his enthusiasm and his knowledge and his fire that he'd be perfect for the job. I knew he'd be great with our kids. His dad was a football coach. It's just in his blood."
The toughest part about asking Favre to coach, Barr said, was telling him he had no budget to coach. Favre didn't flinch. Well, he made Barr a little uncomfortable at first.
"He said, ‘Let me get this right: you want me to get up early to come to work every day, work at night, work on the weekends and you're not going to pay me a dime?' " Barr told the Times. "I said, ‘That's right.' He said, ‘That sounds like the perfect job for me.'"
Favre, Barr and the Warriors hope to stay perfect next week when they host
Terry, which has won two straight and is 4-3 on the season.
