The No. 1 team, according to the MaxPreps Freeman rankings on the 5th annual MaxPreps Basketball Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, hails from Flower Mound, Texas and
Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) High School. The Marauders fought their way to the nation's top spot by compiling a 39-1 record and capturing their first 5A state championship in school history.
On Wednesday, May 4th Marcus High School hosted a school community celebration for the teams' outstanding accomplishments and the gym was filled with family, friends, faculty, dignitaries, and some delicious cakes! Players and coaches were introduced one by one and ran through a cheerleader tunnel to the thunderous roar of the crowd. The award winning pep band hyped up the crowd with assistance from dance routines performed by the cheerleading squad and "Marquette's". After a great ceremony of awards and accomplishments, the final award was the Army National Guard national ranking trophy presentation. MaxPreps representative and local Texan, Jim Redman informed the crowd about the teams amazing accomplishments and how proud they should be for finishing #1 in the nation out of 20,000 teams. Sergeant First Class Patrick Rendon from the Texas Army National Guard delivered an inspiring speech on leadership and how the Marcus basketball team owns a great leader in head coach Danny Henderson. SFC Rendon then proceeded to present the prestigious "Minuteman" trophy to Coach Henderson who accepted with a warm smile and to the applause of the crowd.
The Marauders were a dedicated group of teammates who will be looking to repeat next year since a strong core of their squad is returning. Congratulations to Coach Henderson and the nation's top team according to the Freeman poll, the Marcus High School boys' basketball team!! We hope to be back next year after another state championship title.
