Carver High School didn't win the state championship in football that it wanted this past season, but the victory on Signing Day was almost as sweet for this Columbus, Ga., school that finished 13-1 on the field in 2010.
Twenty Carver seniors signed football scholarships, most who will become the first in their families to attend college.
That was the second-most signees of any school in Georgia this year. Stephenson of Stone Mountain, a school with twice as many students as Carver, had 22 to lead Georgia for the second straight year. Carver actually had one quarter of all signees in Class AA, which comprises 80 schools.
"We think going to college is a very important part of what the culture of our school is,'' Carver coach Dell McGee said. "We want to see our kids have an opportunity at secondary education. A lot of it falls on our hands [as coaches]. It shows how hard my coaches have worked.''
Listed below are the signees from each Georgia school, the Georgia regions with the most signees and the colleges that signed the most Georgia players.
At Carver, the marquee recruit was Isaiah Crowell, a running back who signed with Georgia. Five others signed with Division I-A schools.
McGee has one assistant coach, Jody Hill, whose sole responsibility is to coordinate recruiting. He does no on-field coaching.
Hill and running backs coach David Windon put highlight films together. Ahmand Tinker and Olten Downs correspond with coaches via e-mail and send them videos of players. Other coaches are assigned to keep up with players' grades. All coaches watch film and point out plays to be included in the videos.
Tinker and McGee flew to Dallas last month for the American Football Coaches Association's annual convention and handed out video there.
"It's probably more important to us than anything else in football,'' Carver coach McGee said . "A college diploma is priceless. Experiencing college is priceless as well.''
