A thunder and lightning storm struck with about three minutes left in the first quarter and St. John's leading 7-0. The teams waited close to two hours before the game was called. It's scheduled to resume at Hoover on Saturday at a time to be determined.
St. John's controlled play early and could have had a two-score lead, but a penalty and missed field goal prevented that.
The Cadets took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards to inside the Hoover 10, but a penalty and missed 30-yard field goal try left the game scoreless.

That's when the weather intensified. Lightning struck and the game was delayed. Players sprinted off the field as the rain and lightning hit hard.
Several big games around the country were canceled or postponed due to lightning, including the big annual showdown of Cincinnati rivals
Colerain and
St. Xavier.
St. Xavier was leading that game 6-0 midway through the first quarter when the lightning struck. The game is scheduled to resume 9:30 a.m. local time.
The big Eastern tilt, pitting
St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia, Pa.) versus seventh-ranked
St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.) at the University of Maryland was halted in the second quarter due to lightning. The game was tied at 7-7 and won't be continued, according to officials. The game goes down as a tie.
