In Wednesday's non-league challenge, the Cupertino Pioneers (Cupertino, CA) baseball squad the host Sequoia Cherokee (Redwood City, CA), by a final score of 5-1.

With the win, Cupertino upgrades its record to 2-2 on the season. The Pioneers host Half Moon Bay (Half Moon Bay, CA) to battle the Cougars in a non-league challenge on Saturday, March 2. The Cougars go into the game with a record of 2-1. Half Moon Bay won 10-2 in their recent non-league game against South San Francisco (South San Francisco, CA)

The Cherokee (0-1) will now prepare for their game against Burlingame (Burlingame, CA). The Panthers go into the non-league game with a 2-0 record. In their last game, Burlingame tipped Berkeley (Berkeley, CA), 5-4, in a non-league game.

Jeremy McIntyre's solo home run on the first pitch of the season to a Sequoia hitter seemed to have the squad well on its way. The blast was a false omen however, as the senior center fielder would be the last Cherokee to touch home plate in a 5-1 loss to visiting Cupertino. The Cherokees wasted a strong debut outing from Camrbon who went six solid innings, surrendering two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven. The Pioneers cashed in on four Sequoia errors to plate two runs in the third, and single runs in each of the 5th, 6th and 7th innings, with the final tally coming off of junior reliever Spencer Smith who was also making his varsity debut. The Cherokees could muster only four other hits in the game (a pair of singles by left fielder Gonzalo Rodriguez, and base hits by Eli Dugan and Tyler Leary). Sequoia takes the field again Friday evening under the bright lights of Burlingame against the defending PAL champion Panthers.
