April 2, 2024: West Warwick, RI 02893 The West Warwick Wizards baseball team scored 2 runs and limited the visiting Mt. Pleasant Kilties to 0 in the Wizards league victory on Tuesday.
The Wizards (1-0) will now prepare for their match against Tolman (Pawtucket, RI). The Tigers come into the Division 3 challenge with a 1-1 record. In their last challenge, Tolman got by Mt. Pleasant (Providence, RI), 8-6, in a league challenge.
With the defeat, Mt. Pleasant falls to 0-3 on the season. The Kilties host Scituate (North Scituate, RI) to encounter the Spartans in a Division 3 challenge on Friday, April 5. The Spartans come into the challenge with a record of 0-1. Scituate lost 6-5 in their recent non-league challenge against Moses Brown (Providence, RI)
Game Summary
In a game featuring two of the top teams from 2023, the Wizards (16-1; 18-3) edged the Kilties (13-3; 19-3), 2-0, in a game dominated by pitching.
Senior Logan Dean, who allowed just one hit in five innings of work for his first victory of 2024, struck out six batters while throwing 42 of 59 pitches for strikes.
Senior Edward Roquez, who allowed just two earned runs on five hits, struck out ten batters. Out of 105 pitches thrown, he threw 64 for strikes.
The Wizards, who left seven runners on base, scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Josh Pedus (walk) and Zack Lawrence (bunt single) on second and third, Dean lined a two-run triple to center field.
Sophomore Anthony Burt picked up his first save the year by striking out four batters and allowing just one hit in two innings of relief.
