New York High School Baseball - LaSalle Academy wallops Cristo Rey
April 13, 2023: Brooklyn, NY LaSalle Academy Cardinals (New York, NY) fans exited the stadium thrilled Thursday as they observed their baseball squad overcome the host Cristo Rey (Brooklyn, NY), 17-5 in a league test.
With the win, LaSalle Academy upgrades its record to 3-4 on the season. The Cardinals host St. Edmund Prep (Brooklyn, NY) to battle the Eagles in a Catholic A - North test on Saturday, April 15. The Eagles come into the test with a record of 0-0.
With the defeat, Cristo Rey falls to 0-2 on the season. The host Monsignor Scanlan (Bronx, NY) to battle the Crusaders in a Catholic A - North test on Monday, May 8. The Crusaders come into the test with a record of 3-4.
Game Summary
For the second time this week, the La Salle Academy Cardinals rode another strong pitching performance to defeat Cristo Rey Brooklyn, 17-5 final in five innings at American Legion Fields in Brooklyn. The Cardinals (3-4 overall, 3-0 CHSAA ‘A’ Division) pounded out 12 hits enroute to their third straight win after starting the season with four straight losses.
For the third straight game the Cardinals were led by a baby bird as Freshman, Allen Guiterrez, picked his first varsity win by tossing four and a third innings of 1-hit baseball in his first start. Guiterrez was so close to the complete game but ran out of gas in the bottom of the fifth but gave way to fellow freshmen, Kerick Tejada, who shut the door on the final two Cristo Rey batters via strikeout. A balanced Cardinal offense was led by Manuel Ramirez (3 for 4, 2B, 3R, 2 RBI) and Anthony Gonzalez (2 for 2, 2B, 3R, 2 RBI).
