Fourth Quarter
Chavez bounced back after losing two straight games with a strong team effort rallying from an early 12-point deficit thanks to seniors Andrew Rangel, Joseph Ortega, and Michael Ochoa.
With Chavez trailing 59-56 with under three minutes to play junior Alex Rodriguez converted a three-point play to tie the game at 59. With under two minutes to play Joseph Ortega hit a big three-point basket to break the tie, but Waverly came right back with a three of it’s own to tie it 62. The Chavez defense stopped Waverly on consecutive trips. Joseph Ortega made a big steal and threw it down to a streaking Andrew Rangel who was fouled. Rangel calmly made two foul shots to give Chavez a two-point lead and seconds later Michael Ochoa got a big offensive rebound and basket to extend the lead to four at 66-62 and Ortega made one of two free throws to ice the 67-62 victory.
