New York High School Basketball - Mt. Markham thwarted by Holland Patent
February 8, 2024: West Winfield, NY 13491 The Mt. Markham Mustangs basketball team (West Winfield, NY), was toppled 62-43 in Thursday's non-league battle with the visiting Holland Patent Golden Knights (Holland Patent, NY)
The Golden Knights now possess a 9-9 record. They put it on the line next when they host Adirondack for a non-league battle on Saturday, February 10.
The Mustangs (4-3) will now prepare for their battle against Herkimer (Herkimer, NY). The Magicians come into the non-league battle with a 5-7 record.
First Quarter
Mt Markham jumped out to an early lead thanks to Holland Patent's 2-16 1st quarter shooting.
Terra McLaughlin's 2/5 3-point shooting and a Kiersten Lighthall free throw were the only points scored for HP.
Sophie Rachon kept HP in the game with 6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Second Quarter
Holland Patent fought back to take the lead heading into halftime behind McLaughlin, Michaela Cushman, Lighthall and Faith Zylinski scoring 5, 4, 3, 2 respectively.
McLaughlin clamped down defensively with 4 steals and Cushman added 2 blocked shots.
Third Quarter
Initially clinging to a small lead, HP fell behind after Mt. Markham's 11-0 run.
HP managed to retake a slight lead heading into the 4th qtr. behind McLaughlin's 6 points and Cushman's 5.
Fourth Quarter
Holland Patent asserted their offensive advantage with speed and shooting to dominate the 4th quarter.
Cushman and McLaughlin again led the scoring with 10 and 8 points respectively after several steal/breakaways.
HP also relied on the defense of McLaughln, Zylinski, and Rachon with 4, 4, and 2 steals respectively.
McLaughlin led all scorers with 25 points on 4/8 3pt shooting, while adding 10 steals and 4 assists for the double-double,
Cushman added 19 points, 8 rebounds and 5 steals.
Lighthall and Zylinski each added 8 points, with Zylinski adding 7 assists and 6 steals.
Sophie Rachon fouled out in the 4th after battling all night in the paint with the larger Mt Markham team, her 8 rebounds and 5 steals were crucial against Mt Markham's size advantage.
