Ohio High School Football - South Oldham crushed by Anderson
August 23, 2024: Cincinnati, OH 45255 The Anderson Raptors walloped the visiting South Oldham Dragons football team by a score of 51-6 in Friday's non-league challenge.
In their next game, the Raptors face the West Clermont Wolves (Cincinnati, OH) in a Eastern Cincinnati challenge, on Friday, August 30. Anderson will attempt to improve on its 1-0 season record. The Wolves go into the challenge with a 1-0 record after their 20-18 non-league win over Mt. Healthy (Cincinnati, OH).
The Dragons (0-1) will now prepare for their challenge against Nelson County (Bardstown, KY). The Cardinals go into the non-league challenge with a 0-1 record. In their last challenge, Nelson County was ripped by Hart County (Munfordville, KY), 43-15, in a non-league challenge.
First Quarter
Anderson won the toss and deferred to begin the game, but quickly got the ball back after South Oldham stalled punted on their first drive. With 9:53 to go, senior quarterback Justice Burnam connected with receiver Trace Jallick fora 58-yard Anderson touchdown. Jayonn Saunders rushed and converted the two-point try, and the Raptors got out to an early 8-0 lead. The Dragons failed to do anything on their next possession, and Aidan Oerther punted for the second time to give the ball back to Anderson. Another long pass from Burnam to Jallick put the Raptors inside the red zone, and Burnam found Jake Brammer for an 8-yard touchdown. Saunders once again rushed for the two-point conversion, and at the end of one quarter Anderson held a 16-0 lead over South Oldham.
Second Quarter
The Dragons put together a promising drive to open the second quarter, but Anderson's defense came up big by forcing a fumble in Raptor territory. Brady Kuhn recovered the ball for Anderson. Aiden McClanahan made a 43-yard catch from Burnam to put the Raptors deep into South Oldham territory, and with 8:11 left in the half, Burnam threw to senior Durrell Turner from 40 yards out for another Anderson touchdown. A Jayonn Saunders shovel pass fell incomplete on the 2-point conversion, but the Raptors still held a commanding 22-0 lead. The Dragons failed to do anything on their next drive, and Anderson got the ball back with a little over five minutes left in the half. With 4:15 to go, Turner punched it in on an 8-yard touchdown run, and Caden Piening caught the two-point try from Burnam. The Raptors capped off the first half with a Burnam to McClanahan touchdown and successful Lucas Callahan PAT and led the Dragons 37-0 entering halftime.
Third Quarter
Anderson received the opening kickoff, which Aiden McClanahan returned 22 yards to the Anderson 40, but the Raptors ended up turning the ball over on downs to begin the half. The Dragons also failed to pick up a first down, and the ball went back to Anderson on downs with 5 minutes to go. With four minutes remaining in the third, Burnam notched his fifth passing touchdown of the day on a 59-yard missile to senior tight end Caden Piening to put the Raptors up by 43. Callahan added his second extra point of the day to make it 44-0. The score stayed that way entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Dragons got on the board in the fourth quarter when quarterback Ethan Arnold found Charlie Temple in the corner of the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown with 7:41 to go in the game. The Raptors held Cole Greenwell out of the end zone on the two-point conversion attempt, and the score stood at 44-6. Sophomore Owen Scalf entered the game for Anderson at quarterback, and immediately launched a 54-yard pass to fellow sophomore Nick Rosiello to put the Raptors back in the red zone. With 4:23 remaining, Brody Poetter made his first touchdown reception on Varsity on a 6-yard pass from Scalf and Callahan added the PAT. South Oldham put together a nice final drive, but the clock ran out and the Raptors closed out a 51-6 win on opening day.
